New vehicle classifications
There will also be new vehicle classifications added, with rates intended to better reflect the vehicle’s impact on the road.
The new classifications include motorcycles and medium-sized vehicles. Vehicles with two or three wheels fall into the motorcycle category, while larger pickup trucks, Sprinter-style vans and SUVs, trucks and vans towing a truck fall into the medium category.
Rates are as follows:
- Motorcycles — 0.8x of light vehicle rate
- Medium — 1.5x of light vehicle rate
- Heavy Single — 2x of light vehicle rate
- Heavy Multiple — 3x of light vehicle rate
Most personal vehicles, such as cars, vans, SUVs and small pickup trucks, fall into the light vehicle category. Heavy Single includes single-unit vehicles, tractors and buses, while Heavy Multiple consists of trucks and tractors with one or more trailers.

Drivers with a transponder don’t have to pay camera charges and account fees, with the highway operator saying the transponder pays for itself after three round trips. Starting Jan. 1, an annual transponder lease will cost $29.50 plus tax and additional transponders can be leased on the same account at a price of $11.95 plus tax each.
Highway 407 spans 108 kilometres between Burlington and Pickering and is owned by 407 International Inc.
