Multiple people are in hospital after a collision in North York, police say.
The incident occurred in the Yonge Street and Churchill Avenue area just after 3:20 p.m. on Sunday.
Three pedestrians were taken to a trauma centre, one driver was taken to hospital, and the vehicle remained at the scene, according to police.
Speaking to reporters Sunday evening, Toronto police Insp. Dan Pravica says the vehicle involved was a blue Volvo. The car was travelling southbound on Yonge and “for unknown reasons,” the driver veered off the road and hit three pedestrians on the sidewalk, at the intersection of Yonge and Churchill.
Pravica says two pedestrians who sustained life-threatening injuries are a man and a woman in their mid-20s to early 30s. Meanwhile, the third pedestrian who sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, is a woman in her mid-20s to early 30s.
The driver is described as a man in his 70s.
Investigators say it’s unknown whether the victims have any relationship to each other, or if they were just walking together.
“It does not appear to be a targeted or intentional act right now,” said Pravica.
Pravica says these kinds of incidents can bring up “painful memories.”
“I ask that for those people who are affected by this, even though it appears to be not related whatsoever or not in the same context, to seek some professional help if you need it,” he said.
