TOP 8: After Tommy Edman flied out to left field on the first pitch he saw, Andy Pages singles into center field. Shohei Ohtani, who was 0-3 at the plate, hits a broken-bat single into right field. Pages advanced to second base, and the Blue Jays challenged the call that he was tagged out, but it was denied. Mookie Betts walked to load the bases. Reliever Jeff Hoffman replaced Varland and threw a wild pitch which enabled Pages to score to make it 4-1 Dodgers. Freddie Freeman was intentionally walked to load the bases. Will Smith hit into a force out at short, but the Blue Jays cannot turn the double play as Ohtani scores to make it 5-1. Teoscar Hernandez strikes out swinging to end the inning.

BOT 7: Ernie Clement grounds out to shortstop, and Addison Barger grounds out to first base. Bo Bichette, who started Game 1, comes in to pinch-hit for Isiah Kiner-Falefa and grounds out to short to end the inning.

TOP 7: After Freddie Freeman flied out to deep center, Will Smith hit a solo home run into the second deck of Rogers Centre to give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. Teoscar Hernandez struck out swinging, and Max Muncy hit a 2-2 fastball for a solo home run into the Blue Jays bullpen to increase the Dodgers lead to 3-1. Relief pitcher Louis Varland replaces Kevin Gausman, who leaves after giving up 3 runs on 4 hits with six strikeouts in his World Series debut. Varland gets Enrique Hernandez to fly out to center field on the first pitch he faces to end the inning.

BOT 6: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. grounded out to second base, Alejandro Kirk struck out swinging, and Daulton Varsho popped out to shallow center field to end the inning. Yamamoto has retired the last seven batters he’s faced since giving up a run in the third inning.

TOP 6: Andy Pages lined out to right field, Shohei Ohtani popped out to third base, and Mookie Betts popped out to first base. Starter Kevin Gausman has given up just two hits and struck out five, retiring the last 16 batters he has faced.

Daulton Varsho grounds out to first to end the inning.

8 p.m.: Joe Carter threw out the opening pitch to all-star shortstop Bo Bichette ahead of Game 2 of the World Series as the Blue Jays hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday. Carter received a rousing ovation from the packed Rogers Centre, especially after donning Toronto’s home run jacket and jogging through the home dugout.

“I’ve had the emotions for 32 years. I come back here so often,” said Carter, who famously hit a three-run homer to win the 1993 World Series. “I get that wherever I go here in Toronto, which is great. They just appreciate what I did.

Bo to start on the bench in Game 2

Bo Bichette will begin Game 2 of the World Series on the bench.

The Blue Jays did not include the infielder in their starting lineup for Game 2 against the Dodgers (8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT, Sportsnet, Sportsnet+).

Bichette made his post-season debut in Game 1 in his return from a knee sprain suffered Sept. 6, playing at second base for the first time in his career while registering a hit and a walk at the plate before being replaced in the game by Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

Kiner-Falefa will take Bichette’s spot at second base and bat eighth in tonight’s game.

George Springer remains at designated hitter while Addison Barger and Nathan Lukes will start in the outfield after both came on as pinch-hitters in Game 1.

Also, pitcher Chris Bassitt is dealing with a small cut and blister, but is still good to go if needed in Game 2.

Game 3 & 4 starters announced

Blue Jays manager John Schneider also announced that Max Scherzer will get the nod for Game 3 when the series shifts to Los Angeles on Monday, with fellow righty Shane Bieber set to go for Game 4 on Tuesday.

Scherzer, 41, last took the ball in Game 4 of the ALCS in Seattle against the Mariners, pitching 5.2 innings of two-run ball and striking out five to help the Blue Jays earn the win. It’s been his only appearance so far this post-season.

The three-time Cy Young winner already has four Fall Classic appearances to his name and has a 1-0 record in those outings with a 3.26 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 19.1 innings. He made his first World Series start in 2012 against the San Francisco Giants while a member of the Detroit Tigers.

In his lone season with the Blue Jays, the two-time World Series champ has a 5-5 record with a 5.19 ERA and 1.294 WHIP in 17 starts.

Bieber, another former Cy Young winner, has started Game 3 in both the ALDS and ALCS. Additionally, he took the mound to begin Game 7 of the latter series against the Seattle Mariners.

Across 12.1 post-season innings, Bieber holds a 1-0 record and 4.38 ERA with 15 strikeouts and three walks.

His best outing came in Game 3 against the Mariners, when he recovered after a two-run first inning to pitch six strong in a pivotal Blue Jays victory.

The 30-year-old underwent Tommy John Surgery last season and was traded to the Blue Jays from the Cleveland Guardians at the trade deadline before appearing in a single game this season.

He made his return on Aug. 22, his Blue Jays debut, and went on to post a 3.57 ERA in 40.1 innings.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has yet to announce who will go for his side in Games 3 and 4.
