Police investigate toddler death after falling from North York high-rise apartment

A toddler has died after falling from a high-rise apartment building in North York on Mother’s Day.

Emergency crews were called to an apartment building on Graydon Hall Drive in the Don Mills Road and Highway 401 area just before 12:30 p.m.

Toronto police say a toddler was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This investigation is still ongoing and in the early stages,” a police spokesperson tells CityNews. “We do not have any further information to share at this time.”

Neighbours in the building tell CityNews the toddler fell from the 19th floor.

“My heart dropped,” said a resident of the building, adding that the people had just recently moved into the building. “The family, the kids, they were so nice. Every time we’d see them in the elevator, the little girl, she would wave and laugh at us. So heartbreaking.”

“This is devastating, especially on Mother’s Day,” said another resident, who referenced a similar incident last month at another building. “Perhaps, maybe there should be some more bylaws for builders, for developers for these balconies for some longer fencing on top of the balcony railings, just because we see a lot of these incidents happening back-to-back-to-back.”

On April 26, a six-year-old girl died after falling from the 28th floor of an apartment building on Chalkfarm Drive near Jane Street in North York.
