Hamilton police officers say a 21-year-old man has died in a hospital after he was stabbed and found on a sidewalk early Sunday.

Officers said they were called to Main Street West near Frid Street and Highway 403 at around 2:30 a.m. They said the victim, who was believed to be riding a scooter before he fell onto the sidewalk, was found by a taxi driver who, along with another person, tried to perform first aid.

Acting Det.-Staff Sgt. Lisa Chambers told reporters the man was taken to Hamilton General Hospital where he pronounced dead just after 3 a.m.

She said investigators believe the victim was involved in an altercation early Sunday in front of a business at the corner of Paradise Road North and King Street West less than a kilometre away from where he was found.

“We do know that there was an altercation. What the content of that altercation was, we’re not 100 per cent sure yet. We’re still investigating, speaking to witnesses and reviewing video,” Chambers said.

Few additional details were released, but she added it’s believed he was stabbed in the area he was found.

Chambers said officers are still trying to speak the man’s next of kin outside of Ontario and didn’t release his identity. However, she said the victim was set to start a new job on Monday.

Investigators said they were looking to speak with anyone in the area who might have dash-camera or surveillance video between 2 and 2:45 a.m.

Suspect information wasn’t yet shared by officers as of Sunday.
