A pedestrian is dead after a hit-and-run in Mississauga on Tuesday evening, officials say.

Emergency crews were called to the Winston Churchill Boulevard and Dundas Street West intersection just after 6 p.m. for reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

Officers say the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday night, Peel police Const. Moulika Sharma said the driver of a “dark pickup truck” failed to remain at the scene.

“We encourage the driver to seek legal counsel and turn themselves in to the police,” Moulika said. “It’s just a matter of time until we get them.”

Officials say the pedestrian was travelling northbound on Winston Churchill Boulevard onto the west side of the cross walk. Meanwhile, the fleeing vehicle was driving southbound onto Winston Churchill Boulevard turning westbound on Dundas Street West.

Police have not identified the victim or determined the circumstances leading up to the incident.

Moulika says investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses.

All eastbound and westbound lanes on Dundas Street remain closed between Hampshire Gate and Woodchester Drive for the investigation.
