Alvin Tedjo may have started the Mississauga mayoral election as an underdog, but he has managed to beat out former mayor Bonnie Crombie and incumbent Carolyn Parrish to take over the city’s top job, CityNews projects.
He is winning handidly, leading Parrish in second by over 20,000 votes, despite early polls showing a tight race leading up to election.
“Our optimism, our hope, our vision for what this city could be, our positivity and our unstoppable effort to reach every single resident in the city of Mississauga, to put forward practical solutions that would make a difference in their lives and to earn their trust, all of that hard work has led us to this moment,” said Tedjo in his victory speech.
“Mississauga has made a clear and historic choice to demand a change at City Hall … it’s the honour of a lifetime to stand here as the next mayor of Mississauga.”
Tedjo, who previously served as Ward 2 councillor and finished second in the 2024 mayoral byelection, faced a tough contest from Crombie and Parrish.
Tedjo started the election polling far behind, but made major gains later in the campaign.
He was able to secure the Peel police union’s endorsement and has promised a two-year property tax freeze if he was elected.
Crombie vacated her spot as Mississauga’s mayor in 2024 in order to run for the leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party. After failing to win a seat in the last provincial election, she formally resigned as the party leader in January 2026, only to enter the Mississauga mayor’s race in July.
Parrish won the byelection triggered by Crombie’s resignation.
At her election party Monday night, Crombie said she had called Tedjo and congratulated him on his win. “Tonight, a new geneneration takes the reins. I wish you and the incoming council every success. I love Mississauga and I will cheering for our city to succed under your leadership.”
In her concession speech, Parrish wished Tedjo good luck and said she was at peace with the result. “I know I did a good job,” Parrish said, adding she could’ve simplified her message.
