Police shoot and kill 1 person after North York car crash, SIU investigating

Ontario’s police watch dog is investigating after a Toronto police officer shot and killed a man on Saturday afternoon during an investigation in North York.

Officers were called to the area of King High Avenue and De Quincy Boulevard, just before 1:30 p.m. for reports of a damaged vehicle that was driving erratically.

Police say the driver of the vehicle was involved in a crash and attempted to flee the scene as officers arrived.

Authorities allege that he was in possession of a firearm and say there was an interaction between the suspect and two officers.

“One of the officers discharged his firearm,” the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) wrote in a press release shared Saturday evening. “The man was struck. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Authorities have identified the suspect as a 26-year-old man, but have not released his name or photo.

The SIU has invoked its mandate and assigned four investigators and three forensic investigators to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police, among other officials, that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
